Our Story

Haniah Zaheer

From volunteering locally to globally in underserved communities, there had always been one thing in common--a lack of basic necessities. While we know we cannot provide every necessity to every person, what we can do is make this small important difference to them. While volunteering at an underserved clinic, we noticed several newborns were being admitted for hypothermia due to lack of warm hats, clothing, and blankets--something most of us would take for granted. This inspired us to believe that we could make a positive impact on numerous children simply by providing them with warmth.

Since then, Its Bitsy Knits has collaborated with other non-profit organizations, federally qualified health centers in Northeast Ohio, SOS Children’s villages in Pakistan and Jordan, Ann and Lurie Children’s Hospital, as well as several Women’s Centers including UPMC Magee-Women's Hospital to distribute over 4,000 articles of warm clothing and blankets. The organization utilizes a local network of volunteer knitters of all ages and walks of life to source the garments, which we then distribute via our partnerships. We strive to reach as many children as possible to reduce the serious health impacts of cold weather exposure for those who may not have consistent access to adequate warm clothing. This experience strengthened their passion for advancing health equity, particularly for children.
